Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease also known as IBD. It is seen that IBD includes diseases that directly affect the gastrointestinal tract of the body. On a similar note, ulcerative colitis is caused when the colon or the large intestine is inflamed. This part of the body is also known as the rectum. Due to this inflammation of the lining of the large intestine, there are tiny sores formed known as ulcers on the lining of the colon.

This can usually be seen beginning in the rectum and spreads upward from that location. Ulcerative colon can involve the entire colon and therefore can be extremely painful and can also create other simultaneous health issues. It is very important to recognize the symptoms of colitis and consult a specialist as soon as possible. As the inflammation grows, it causes irritation during the bowel movement and empties it frequently.

The lining of the colon loses cells and simultaneously ulcers get formed. These ulcers are the reason of bleeding and release of pus and mucus. While colitis is observed in people of all ages, it is mostly diagnosed for people who are aged between 15 and 35 years of age. Although it is also seen that people after the age of 50 are diagnosed with this disease and is usually seen in men.

As per reports, there is 50 percent of the people who are diagnosed with ulcerative colitis have mild symptoms and therefore may not take it seriously. But it is important to consult the doctor whether the symptoms are mild or severe.

If a person is suffering from ulcerative colitis, he or she might experience severe abdominal pain along with increased abdominal sounds. Bloody stools, diarrhea, rectal pain, are some of the common symptoms, which are specifically due to the inflammation of the lining of the large intestine. Apart from these, there is lethargy, tiredness, and the person might become anemic. Along with these, the person may also experience weight loss due to diarrhea, dehydration, and malnutrition, which are usually the most common signs of ulcerative colitis.
