Here’s How to Calculate Your Ideal Weight

As most people are aware, there is an ideal weight range according to height, age, and gender. Achieving the ideal body weight takes effort and maintaining it can avoid health issues and improve the overall quality of life. Facts indicate that around 34.9% of adults in the country are obese and 68.6% are overweight. There are certain calculations by which you can draw out an ideal body weight chart by age and height.

While we know determining the Body Mass Index (BMI) and Body Fat Percentage are the best ways to know if an individual is at a healthy weight, there are other simple methods that will help you to calculate the ideal weight and subsequently create an ideal body weight chart by age.

  • Hamwi ideal body weight formula – This formula to determine the ideal body weight by age and height is used for adults over five feet and differs for men and women. For men, it is 106 lbs for 5 feet. For each additional inch over 5 feet, add 6 lbs to 106 lbs. Therefore, for a 6-feet 2-inch male, the ideal weight would be 106 + (14 * 6) = 190 lbs. In the case of females, start with 100 lbs and add 5 lbs for every additional inch. So, for a female whose height is 5 feet 4 inches, the ideal weight will be 100 + (4 * 5) = 120 lbs. The default formula is applicable if the person has a medium frame. Add 10% for a large frame and reduce 10% for a small frame. Therefore, according to the ideal body weight chart by age and height, a small-framed woman of height 5 feet and 4 inches will have an ideal weight of roughly 108 lbs, while a large-framed woman of the same height will have an ideal weight of 132 lbs.
  • Devine ideal body weight equation – The Devine formula defines the ideal body weight chart by age similar to the Hamwi method, but with a slight variation in its formula. For males, start with 110 lbs for 5 feet and an additional 5 lbs for every inch. Therefore, for a 6-feet 2-inch tall man, the ideal weight will be 110 + (14*5) = 180 lbs. For females, it is 100 lbs at 5 feet and an additional 5 lbs for every inch. For example, a woman of 6 feet will have an ideal weight of 100 + (12*5) = 160 lbs.

However, these calculators should only be used as a general guide to maintaining weight. Nutrition and fitness are equally essential for the overall well-being of every individual.
